Scrapheap, or, you can’t save them all

Johnny B. Goode recently found the above photo over at the Stayin’ Safe motorcycle blog, with the author complaining about how much of a hazard such a situation creates for bikers. We agree, and we also mourn the loss of a few good parts in this North Carolinan’s scrap drive.

That steering wheel’s from a 1941-1948 Ford.

And that’s a flathead Ford V-8 of what appears to be the 24-stud variety, used in 1938-1948 Ford and 1939-1948 Mercuries. And an open driveline instead of a torque tube.

The open driveline would lead one to presume the axle is also one of the highly sought after 1942 to 1948 pickup banjo axles, though we can only see the rear of the center section.

So it looks like our Tarheel trucker fit a pickup into a pickup. Hope he got good money for his scrap pile.
