You’ll hear it all the time when making a reference to Hershey: You never know what you’ll find. It’s like hearing “Jingle Bell Rock” the day after Halloween, just because November 1 signals the beginning of the shopping season. But unlike the loose definition of the start of the holidays, the aforementioned phrase is definitely true in many ways. Take this 1979 Cadillac Eldorado:
First, the particulars: 350-cu.in. EFI V-8 making 170hp; automatic transmission. It looked good from 20 feet, even 10 feet away while meandering the car corral. It’s only when you got close that you realized that, even without an asking price listed, there was an air of desperation about it.
True enough, the interior looked decent. But aside from the engine’s lack of get-up-and-go, there were a few other issues, such as the blisters and rust at the base of the vinyl-clad C-pillar and a grille that could no longer maintain a vertical posture.
These last two issues aside (and whatever else was lurking in the shadows), could its mechanical requirements be a simple tune-up; possibly a rebuild; at worst, a replacement block? If the latter, what would you have done if the money was right?
