And why not include Studebaker dealerships in our Lost Dealerships series? Gary Faules forwarded us a link to Belle’sDaddy’s Flickr account, where we found a couple photos of a 1964 Studebaker Lark Cruiser posed in front of Smiley’s Studebaker Garage on Route 29 on the northern end of East Greenville, Pennsylvania, circa late 1976 to early 1977, well after South Bend had given up on the auto industry.
Belle’sDaddy, better known as Alan, said he used to buy parts for the Lark there, and that he believes it lasted through the early to mid-1980s, but that it no longer resembles an old garage. Instead, offices fill the building now.
A little phonebook digging led us to Smiley’s sister-in-law, who informed us that Smiley was the nickname for Marvin Marks, who has since passed. Her late husband, Melvin (Smiley’s brother), also worked in the garage as a mechanic for 27 years and took her on their honeymoon to Alaska in a 1952 Studebaker. “He loved to travel, he loved Alaska and he loved Studebakers,” she said.
Perhaps I need to dig out an old issue of Motor News to see if Smiley advertised with us.
