Lost Buick-Pontiac dealership: Westerly, Rhode Island

Ray Hoxsie Buick-Pontiac, Westerly, Rhode Island

On a recent photo trip through southern New England, Litwin and I passed a real neat building on Route 1 in Westerly, Rhode Island, with a couple old old Buick-Pontiac signs affixed to ‘em. One U-turn later, and we were investigating the remnants of Ray Hoxsie Buick-Pontiac.

On Google Maps StreetView, it still appears to be a thriving business, selling new cars out of the newer building and used cars out of the lot around the older building that caught our eye. In person, Ray Hoxsie is as abandoned as those photoessays depict Detroit nowadays. The older building doesn’t appear to have been used in quite sometime – a peek through the door reveals plants growing up through the mold- and lichen-encrusted linoleum floor. The newer building still contains traces of its dealership existence: a couple faded displays in the showroom, stacks of CDs on desks in the service department, even a fine collection of V-belts above the parts counter.

The main building, at 100 Granite Street Behind the main building, looking out to Route 1 Looking inside, we could see all sorts of parts left behind The older building, which first caught our eye Nice of Mr. Hoxsie to let us know when he constructed the older building Sign on the older building Shadows of signs on the exterior wall of the 1929 building

I would suspect Hoxsie was one of the hundreds of dealers culled by GM earlier this year as part of GM’s turnaround. Probably didn’t help that they would’ve only had Buick to fall back on once Pontiac had gone under.
