On a recent photo shoot with McGean near his old stomping grounds (White Plains, New York), we happened to pass the former home of Tappan Motors at 300 N. Broadway in North Tarrytown, New York , while scouting photo locations. Tarrytown may strike a chord with some of you - just down the hill was the site of the former Tarrytown GM assembly plant.
We didn’t find out what the building’s becoming, but we did hear that it most recently was a gym and still had the plate glass windows surrounding the showroom. McGean said he recalls that the owners of the dealership at one point bought a house across the street from it (behind me in the first photo) to use just for parts storage. He also said a buddy of his used to work the parts counter there, so I suggested it’s time for a little reunion with that buddy.
And we mentioned Shore Rambler in Lumberton, New Jersey, in an earlier post, but Donnelly managed to convince the Lumberton Historical Society to send us a photo of the dealership. Ruth Lewis of the historical society said that the town’s longtime building inspector, Bill Allen, “for many years took photos of all the old buildings that were going to be torn down in town.” So to both Bill and Ruth, we thank you. A couple notes on the Lost AMC Dealership Project in general: First, even though I’ve been linking to Eddie Stakes’s master list of former AMC dealerships, circa 1983, Steven Clark is the man responsible for putting that list on the Internet in the first place, and so a debt of gratitude goes out to you, Steven.
Second, I’ve received plenty of submissions for the project, and I will get them up here in due time. In the meantime, if you know of a former AMC, Jeep, Studebaker, Kaiser-Frazer or any independent dealership in your town and have information to share, please do.
