King Midget

A couple weeks ago, I posed the question on the Hemmings Forum of whether high gas prices would convince classic car enthusiasts to keep their cars in the garage and off the road this summer. Got a mixed bag of responses, but certainly more people committed to driving their collector cars than I expected. And as Hemmings kicked off the cruise-in season last night, we not only welcomed more than 125 cars to our parking lot, but we noticed more small cars than usual, including the above King Midget, a 1962 that Alan Day brought up from Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

DAF pickup

A common sight around these parts, John deBruin showed up with his 1962 DAF Type 304 pickup. How common? Well, check out this little article in the Barre-Montpelier Times-Argus’s Vermont Sunday Magazine about John and his DAF.

Beetle from behind

And this very nice Volkswagen Beetle that nobody seemed to have written down any information about.

Maine Pacer

The widest small car to show up, a 1977 AMC Pacer with 32,000 original miles and Navajo seats, visited us all the way from Maine.

Chevy II

And even a Chevy II, this one a 1963 with a 194-cu.in. six-cylinder owned by Jenn Sharp and James Cross of Bennington, Vermont, qualifies as a small car.

Dodge Power Wagon

Yet the high gas prices continue to not faze certain other collector car owners, including Paul Keiper of Washington, Massachusetts, who owns this 1948 Dodge Power Wagon.

Caddy on wires

Nor did they seem to bother a number of 1950s and 1960s Cadillac owners, including Tony Milazzo of Readsboro, Vermont, who wheeled in with his pink-n-white (n-gold) 1968 DeVille convertible.

Inperial Crown and King Midget

The ultimate contrast, however, came when our parking lot attendants placed Alan Day’s King Midget side-by-side with Don and Dotty Raiche’s 1965 Imperial Crown four-door hardtop. As Alan noted to Don, “I could park in your trunk!”

Our next cruise-in takes place May 29. Hope to see you there.
