BigLorryBlog visits the Hannover truck show, brings back vintage truck photos, we thank the pie-give

Goliath GD750 three-wheeler

I’m still catching up on my reading after being away from two weeks (I know, complain, complain…), so expect a Four-Links rather soon. In the meantime, I wanted to point out a five-part (part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5) series of posts that BigLorryBlog posted on the 2008 IAA Commercial Vehicles Show in Hannover last month - not on all the new trucks exhibited there, but on all the vintage trucks, including a number of odd, significant and unidentified (or unelaborated) vehicles rounded up in their own show-within-a-show.

Seeing as we’re a bit late to the guessing game party and stand no chance for the pies, that means we can enjoy the hard work that others already posited in the comments. For example, the three-wheeler above, according to commenter Howard Pettigrew, is a “Goliath GD750 made from 1949 to 1955 - part of the Borgward Group based in Bremen.”

Opel Blitz pickup

The little blue guy here looks oddly familiar to U.S. truck enthusiasts until you get to the Fargo-like grille. Apparently, Bedford in England used the dies from Chevrolet/GMC Advanced Design-era pickups for a while, then shipped the dies off to Opel, which produced the Blitz version of the pickup through to the early 1970s. I think I may have to seek out one of those someday.

early Unimog

And, of course, I couldn’t go without reposting BLB’s photo of an early Unimog. For elucidation purposes, the Unimog’s history apparently goes back to right after World War II, when first Erhard and Sons, then later Boehringer built the Mercedes-engined tractors. Mercedes, which developed the concept of the Unimog, didn’t take over production until 1950.
