A Captive Audience?

I can see this plate just fine, thank you.
I can see this plate just fine, thank you.

Due to a possible defect in the original manufacture of some of the current New York State license plates, some people at the Capitol in Albany, including the governor, have decided it is time for every vehicle registered in New York to get a brand spanking new license plate next year.

Oh, by the way, that will only cost you a one-time $25 issuance fee unless you have a vanity plate, then it will cost you $45. And these costs are over and above the standard bi-annual registration fees at renewal time.

Proceeds will be applied to the state deficit now quickly approaching $10 billion. New Yorkers (including myself) are squawking at the obvious revenue-generating move by state officials.

Patty Ritchie, St. Lawrence County Clerk and several other upstate politicians have started a campaign to repeal this new state mandate, which surprisingly has only two representatives outside the New York City area who have come out in favor of it. Granted, the plates produced before 1991 may be deteriorating, but why would anyone who got a new plate after 1991 have to fall under the same criteria? Also let’s not forget that the average household has at least two cars, probably at least one motorcycle or ATV, a boat trailer or camper and maybe a pickup truck and/or tractor which all need the new plates, so that $25 per plate can add up quickly in many homes.

New Yorkers can voice your opposition to the state’s reaching deeper into state taxpayers pockets by signing a petition online at www.nonewplates.com. And for those of you non-New Yorkers, get ready, because if the New York state government can get away with it, your state can’t be too far behind. Paying attention, Mr. Schwartzenegger?

And whatever happened to convicts stamping a decent plate that the state could use for years? Didn’t they used to do that  at state prisons like Sing Sing anyway? Did somebody hurt their finger in the press machine?
