Terrible news guys. It appears that the head honchos at publishing powerhouse Source Interlink have decided to pull the plug on one of the best import-centric mags in the business: Sport Compact Car.
SCC showed yours truly that the world of modded automobiles was about more than just big shiny rims, sparkly paintjobs and scantily-clad jailbait. SCC taught me the fundamentals of engine tuning and the black art of suspension modification, and provided a few chuckles along the way (anyone remember the SCC Technical Assistance Program?).
The genius of Dave Coleman, the geekiness of Jay Chen and the literary skill of James Tate and Joey Leh were a breath of fresh air in a magazine segment dominated by puerile titles, who often seemed more concerned about how much dish a car had than how quick it was around Willow Springs, and their expertise and insight will be sorely missed.
It's a terrible end for the 20-year-old title, and the news also follows Source Interlink's recent decision to can Turbo & High Tech Performance (which this writer regularly contributed to). The enthusiast community will be worse off without them, and it's disappointing that Source Interlink chose to let them go rather than persevere with them or sell them off. A moment's silence please...
