What was once scrap metal…

A swap meet is like an open invitation for you to get into trouble. My understanding wife has, over the years, has not only accepted the fact that I AM going to be coming home with something, but will actually accompany me whenever possible. I suspect it’s to ensure that my purchases are small enough to fit in the trunk rather than an open trailer, so far.

If you’re a regular reader of Hemmings Motor News, then no doubt you’ve read our coverage of the Zephyrhills event back in February deep in the heart of western Florida. In fact, the Car Corral feature in the upcoming August issue wraps up this year’s event coverage.

However, a one page feature is, at times, not enough to give you the scope of what was available for the taking, which brings me back to my original point; swap meets are trouble. And it was plainly obvious that, at least in Florida, many a muscle car is still being dragged out of the woods (or yard, barn, etc.) for the next sucker enterprising individual to tackle the project. Case in point: a 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass.

It was not clear whether or not the two extra hoods were to be sold with the car (one being from a second gen Camaro). If your initial thought is that it just might be a 4-4-2, think again. The VIN told all that it was a - forgive the term - plain-jane Cutlass hardtop, built in Lansing, with nothing more than a 350 V-8 under the hood.

As you can see by the rear view, it’s well stocked with extra deck lids and body panels. The vinyl top has gone missing as well.

Somewhere under the extra ton or so of hubcaps - hmmm, perhaps it was yanked from a junkyard - might be a console with a stick; if you look close, the column lacks a shifter. It appeared as though the seats were missing as well. No asking price, thus leaving interested passers-by to formulate their own.
