Upgrading the Spitfire

The options list for the Spitfire in 1978 wasn’t very long. Look past the trim rings and the door edge guards, and you’d see that the only things you might want to spend your money on were the overdrive gearbox and the removable hardtop. My car had neither of those, so I’d been hunting.

I somehow managed to find both in the same parts car. It’s been parked outdoors, on a dirt driveway, since 1990, so the body is pretty rusty. It’s a gold mine to me, though. The overdrive is going to be a godsend when I make my trip out to Ohio this October for the America’s British Reliability Run. By the way, if you have a use for these 1979 bumpers, let me know.

The owner said it was running fine when she parked it — she and her husband were starting a family, and the Spit just didn’t have enough seats. I haven’t tried to start it yet, but everything’s there — even all that BL emissions stuff.

Think it got damp inside? Check out the peeling varnish and the crusty defroster vents. But it’s complete, and I’ll be packing away all those switches and gauges for the day when I need them.

What was in your cassette deck in 1990? My search of the shelf under the dash turned up some Elton John, Eric Clapton and Sha Na Na. And there’s another one in the stereo that I haven’t gotten out yet.
