While discussing other important AMC matters, Jonathan Tucker thought he’d share the above photo of his father’s (Jerry Tucker’s) drag-race Gremlin in front of the former Bob King AMC on Main Street in High Point, North Carolina.
It’s now a U-Haul truck rental. There was another site for the same dealership that is now a Hyundai dealership.
Jonathan said his father’s Gremlin was actually his second AMC race car:
He started racing a Hurst SC/Rambler in late ‘69 and ran it until late ‘72. He met Wally Booth at a local strip in mid ‘72 and was started building the Gremlin. It took him a couple of years to get it built and he says technology had surpassed him in the process so the Gremlin wasn’t too successful (plus being very squirrely to drive). We actually found some old 8mm footage of his last runs in the Rambler that also had Wally Booth, Ronnie Sox, and Roy Hill. After that he built a small block ‘59 Corvette and ran up until late ‘75. The Rambler was by far his favorite car and it he kept it up until two years ago when he sold it to a friend to put back on the strip. The car only had 3000 miles on it…most of which were 1/8 and 1/4 miles.
Even though it’s not currently in its red/white/blue livery, it’s good to see they haven’t swept its race history under the rug for the sake of concours restoration standards.
