Want a Diesel Subaru? Let 'Em Know!

Though a lot of the car manufacturers are on full steam ahead to develop a clean diesel motor for the North American market, some are hesitating over the question of whether US buyers will accept diesel-powered cars. Automakers' jitters seem to be largely based on the results of one recent Kelley Blue Book survey which suggested that a majority of Americans still misconstrue modern diesels as "noisy and smelly," and that interest in diesel power for cars and small trucks is on the decline. These findings are contradicted by a JD Power survey that had 23% of US car-shoppers in 2007 considering a clean diesel, nearly double the 2006 percentage. Still, Subaru is one of those manufacturers adopting the wait-and-see approach on the potential for diesel in the US, despite the fanfare over their new 150 hp boxer turbo-diesel. Though they're already tweaking the new diesel for domestic emissions regs, they want to know if anyone in the US would actually buy one. Would you? Check out Popular Mechanics' test-drive review of the diesel Legacy and Outback wagon and take a look at this awesome PM article on clean-diesel technology and how it stacks up against the hybrids.
