I'm just here to make Mr. McQueen look good!

Today would have been Steve McQueen’s 81st birthday.   Lately, certain corners of the internet have been pushing the McQueen brand for all they’re worth.   There have been articles about Steve’s Ferrari 250 Lusso, Steve’s Jaaaaguar XKSS, Steve’s Porsche 911, the Mustang Steve drove in Bullitt, Steve’s watch, Steve’s perfume,  Steve’s car accident, Steve’s motorcycle reviews, Steve’s sports car reviews, and yes…..Steve’s wedding tackle.

To me, and to some of you reading this, all this McQueen idolatry is creepy.  Really creepy. And I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to think that Steve would have found it creepy too.   Today, you’re going to see the Cult of McQueen in full movie star mode.  A celebration of a guy, who if his own mythos is to be believed, tried to get away from the Hollywood celebrity cult every chance he could.  They’ll be articles about the cars, his style, and more clips of Bullitt, LeMans, and The Great Escape than you can shake a dozen sticks at.  But we at Hooniverse, being the shit-stirrers cultured folks we are, choose to honor Mr. McQueen in a way he might have actually liked.  As an actor, who took his craft seriously; an actor who studied the Stanislavski method and studied under Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio.    So, here’s a clip of a hirsute Mr. McQueen in Arthur Miller’s adaptation of the Henrik Ibsen play, “An Enemy of the People”.   Happy Birthday, Steve.
