Toyota's Aygo Crazy, The Ultimate City Car

Japanese Performance Car News, 14.06.2008 in Partner- und Mitglieder-Blogs, Archiv (Blogs, Mitglieder-Artikel)

If you live in, around or commute into a large city, you'll no doubt be aware of the distinct advantage a subcompact car like the Toyota Aygo has over larger, more cumbersome vehicles. Its small size and low weight helps you zip between traffic, park more easily and save a lot of fuel in the process, but in terms of outright performance it's nothing special - and then there are those looks.

Very feminine.

The Aygo Crazy, on the other hand, suffers from none of these problems. With its mid-mounted turbocharged engine driving the rear wheels and plethora of vents, intakes and fender flares, this is one micro car that sports a rather obvious set of cojones.

With 200hp and 240Nm of torque available to shift its 1050-odd kilos, the Aygo Crazy (geddit?) should prove to be a real blast out on a circuit or gymkhana course. Power is provided by the same 1.8-litre 1ZZ-FE found in the MR-2/MR-S roadster, with Toyota Motorsport bolting on a turbocharger for some extra kick. The transmission is the same 5-speed manual found in the MR-2, and the whole mechanical package is good for a 5.7 second 0-100kph sprint, with top speed pegged at 204kph.

Mounting the engine in the back precluded the use of the standard Aygo's rear torsion beam suspension, so the dual-link Macpherson strut design from the MR-2 was adapted to the Aygo Crazy. Track is now one inch wider all around, while the struts themselves are Tein adjustable units. Braking is now provided by four-piston Brembo calipers and 328mm discs up front, with 280mm ventilated discs replacing the standard Aygo's drums out back. The steering ratio is also a quick 13.2:1, thanks to a new electrically-assisted rack.

At £100,000 the Argo Crazy certainly isn't cheap. In fact, with only one of these things ever made, the Argo Crazy will remain a one-off engineering study, with Toyota expressing no desire to offer this model to the general public. However, for those of you who are getting a little bored with your morning commute, the precedent has been set: Your Aygo + wrecked MR-2 = fun. C'mon people, I dare one of you to build something like this.

The Aygo Crazy is due to make its first public appearance at the British International Motor Show this July.
