We've been hearing a lot lately about Toyota's new FR Sports, but unfortunately little attention has been given to Subaru's side of the story. Holiday Auto have now weighed in with their own renderings of what the new Subaru RWD sports coupe could look like and to be honest, it doesn't look all that bad.
HA's design takes many of Subaru's contemporary design cues and blends them with a short, attractive 2-door coupe body. Aside from the Stars of Pleiades themselves, the grille and headlamp clusters are perhaps the biggest link to Subaru, while the beltline crease and subtle wheelarch flares are also reminiscent of the new GRB/GH Impreza. The rear is pleasant, if a little featureless, but as we must always do with these things we've got to remind you that these are simply artists impressions, and not necessarily representative of a production model.
Indeed, while it has been acknowledged by Toyota that Subaru will benefit directly from the collaboration between the two companies on the Toyota RWD project, it is still unknown whether Subaru will stray from AWD with this vehicle or offer it as an all-paw, weather-resistant sports car. Our money is on the platform only being capable of supporting a RWD drivetrain, as Subaru's current AWD configurations require the engine to be placed entirely forward of the front axle centreline - something that would play havoc with handling dynamics if only the rear wheels were driven. HA believes this is the case too, and says the engine will instead be hard up against the firewall in a front-midship layout.
The engine in question is likely to be a naturally-aspirated 162kW EJ20 with an option of a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox. Weight is now expected to be around the 1300kg mark, and the mechanical package is expected to be similar, if not identical, between both the Subaru and Toyota versions. Projected sale date is for late 2010, while price should be around JPY 2,000,000.
