Japanese magazine Best Car, like many others of its ilk, is notorious for pumping out computer-enhanced renderings of upcoming models, models which have yet to break cover. This time though, their images of what they say is the next WRX STi look so true-to-life they may in fact be the real deal.
Five pages of the magazine have been posted up on the net, and judging from the multiple angles of the car depicted, this is exactly how the GH Impreza STi should look. In fact, the basic sheetmetal appears to be almost identical to that of Subaru's WRC concept (below), which was unveiled at Frankfurt yesterday. The flares add some sex to the standard GH's flabby curves, while the new front bumper, mesh grille and quad tailpipes add a sense of sporting intent that was severely lacking in the cooking model Impreza.
It looks great - even more so in the gunmetal grey depicted - and at least now the enthusiast community can move towards forgiving Subaru for watering-down the WRX badge. However, looking good is only part of the performance car equation, and Best Car report that the STi will be good for 220kW and a sizable 450Nm of torque - all from the familiar EJ20 turbocharged flat-four. Brembo brakes will turn the "go" into "slow", while the usual 4WD electronic trickery that featured in previous generations of STi will also be applied to the new car.
Other info is scarce, as the article is in Japanese and the only things I can make out are the key numbers and the dyno chart. However, with such good looks and respectable muscle behind it, it looks like the STi legend will continue on in the GH Impreza.
