It appears that the R35 GT-R's semi-automatic gearbox is starting to cause headaches for at least one Japanese tuner, sparking rumours that the complex DSG system might not be up to the task of handling significantly more power than standard.
Japanese tuning house MCR report that the gearbox on their R35 is wearing out a lot faster than anticipated, something which they attribute to the higher power output of the car as well as the serious track duty they've been putting it through. Kobayashi-san from MCR estimates that the lifespan of a standard R35 gearbox coupled to a non-standard engine is only 12 months if subjected to a life of hardship on the track. Given that the DSG is the only gearbox currently available for the GT-R, hardcore enthusiasts may have to wait until an aftermarket solution presents itself before chasing big power.
Nissan themselves may already have a solution on the way though. With the upcoming Spec-V variant rumoured to have a significant power hike over the regular GT-R, the gearbox could well be strengthened to cope with the extra grunt - and hence become a popular retrofit for tuners. We'll find out in due course, but for now enjoy the below video of the Spec-V prototype testing at the Nurburgring.
