Infiniti May Resurrect GT-R 4-Door

Tony, 19.02.2008 in Partner- und Mitglieder-Blogs, Archiv (Blogs, Mitglieder-Artikel)

Less than a week ago we brought you news of Infiniti's intent to make use of the GT-R's PM platform and VR38/GR6 engine and gearbox package. That was pretty much all we knew back then, but now it transpires that Nissan's prestige arm is looking at creating a high performance sedan out of the GT-R's innards.

According to Motor Trend, a senior executive at Nissan has confirmed a 4-door performance sedan based on the GT-R's architecture is on the Infiniti's drawing board, while a couple of artists renderings have already made their way onto the Internet.

MT speculate that the Infiniti sedan may forgo the GT-R's complex steel/aluminium/carbon-composite structure in favour of an all-steel body. While it may weigh even more than the GT-R's portly frame, outright performance isn't the highest concern in the luxo-sport sedan segment.

While we baulked at the idea of a badge-engineered Infiniti GT-R, we welcome the news of a sedan derivative of Nissan's supercar. A four-door GT-R isn't exactly old news - Autech produced a limited number of R33 GT-R sedans in the '90s (below)- but a new one will definitely allow Infiniti to close the gap between the Japanese and the Europeans in the luxury-performance stakes.
