Joe Bolger's shop

Our friend David Greenlees doesn’t spend all of his time wrenching on Mercers and Duesenbergs. Every once in a while, he visits other extremely talented fabricators in and around New England and creates a maelstrom of awesome that makes us mere mortals feel utterly inadequate. For example, he recently visited his friend Joe Bolger down in Barre, Massachusetts, and reported back to us:

Joe is one of the most talented fabricators, inventors, and metal magicians in the country. Joe will tackle just about any problem and come up with a solution and also make the machine to do whatever he wants.

He is a four time New England Motocross Champion in the 60’s and also won the Canadian National Motocross Championship in 1959. He has also been inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

Joe now fabricates parts for restoration shops and private owners mostly for cars and motorcycles but also an occasional boat part.

He builds and sells to custom order only an incredible English wheel that leaves all others in the dust. It has the capability to form metal right up to a 90 angle and can also form curves without putting an arc in the piece in the long direction if it is not needed.

Joe also has invented and sells a power hammer that is run by nothing more than a drill press. It can do everything a one-ton power hammer will do plus he has made dies for it which will also form louvers either straight or curved. After you are done with it is light enough to just hang on the wall out of the way.

He is an antique auto enthusiast and owns and drives long distances his beautiful 1917 Pierce-Arrow 48 Touring car which he keeps ready to go at a moment’s notice.

One of Joe’s long time projects is a trike he designed and built which is similar to other period machines which were popular in England. It is powered by a Honda water-cooled V-twin which drives through the rear wheel. He has built 95 percent of this machine with his own talented hands along with help from his son Brent, to try to finish up the body. Check out the photos of it and you will see how amazing it is.

He also custom builds and sells English wheels or power hammers. He has for other restoration shops which have sold or put away their old bulky English wheels or hammers after using his. They will do everything the big ones will do and then some and take up very little space. (Yes, John, we know you’re no fan of three-wheeled vehicles. We forgive you for that.)
