Since I’ve been at Hemmings, it seems as though every year I get to photograph a single exceptional car, one that stands out among all others. This year’s came early, when I took a brief tour of Ted Davis’ ludicrously amazing early car collection in Oklahoma City.
Second in the starting lineup: 1911 Franklin Model D. I didn’t drive this one, but Ralph Hamlin did when he came in second in the Los Angeles to Phoenix desert races. It came to Oklahoma in ‘13, and that’s about it.
OK, Ted did recreate the seats. Leather gets dry over 97 years.
It’s tough to describe what it’s like to be around it. Even harder to describe what that valve-and-a-half, 302-cu.in. aircooled six sounds like. What it feels like, is someone throwing firecrackers at your head.
Best part: Ted had no fear of it, and ran it hard. Go Ted go!
