Dan’s post about the controversial sale of cars from the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum prompts me to mention this 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL coupe, which sold at RM’s Monterey auction this August. The car had been in the possession of its original owner, a Robert Orr, until 2005, when it was donated to the museum. The car, which had been repainted once but never restored, brought $495,000, including a buyer’s premium of 10 percent.

The catalog listing reads, in part,

A collection of the Western Reserve Historical Society, the museum presents the history of land and air transportation, showcasing historically and technically interesting cars, aircraft, motorcycles, bicycles and even spacecraft, and in particular their connection to the culture and history of Northeast Ohio. This car was particularly special as it had remained in Akron with Mr. Orr from new!

Look for our coverage of RM Monterey in the December issue of Hemmings Motor News.
