Even bagger owners have been known to twist the wick occasionally.
While on vacation last week, riding the Tail of the Dragon, Hellbender 28 and other backroads of Tennessee and North Carolina, I ended up at Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson on Saturday night to see their attempt at a world record number of motorcycles doing a 3-second burnout simultaneously.
Line ‘em up against the Jersey barrier and grab some front brake!
The crowd was huge and so were the beer company profits as locals on rat bikes from all over the Tennessee hills lined up with Harley bikers, “newbies” and RUBs with a few crotch rockets thrown in for good measure. They even had one girl on a Honda Rebel who had to be shown how to do a burnout during her qualifying run.

The old record was 216 bikes which was set last year at the same location. The new record: 237. There were a few fender-benders from bikes sliding into each other and a handful of bikes just kept burning them up until the tire popped. If it wasn’t for the smell I would have thought I was back up on top of the Cherohala Skyway after a downpour again from the thick smoke. I never did find out how late the dealership’s service dept. was open but I am pretty sure they wouldn’t have had a tire in stock for a Katana, Gixxer or Rebel anyway. Oh well, just have another beer until someone can come and haul you home. It was one of those “train wreck” events you think you can’t miss but I could have and probably should have.
