Mopar gets its stroke on

Mopar stroker

So late last week, Mopar announced a bunch of new crate engines – aluminum-block 6.1-liter Hemi, aluminum-block 426 Hemi, 572-inch version of the new Hemi, 4.7-liter Jeep six-cylinder…

Mopar will also introduce a new 4.7-liter I-6 Stroker long block, a
powerful upgrade for the 4.0-liter I-6 made famous in Jeep vehicles built from 1991-2006. Because off-road enthusiasts appreciated the dependability and performance of the previous 4.0-liter engine, Mopar developed a more powerful engine that delivers an expected 265 hp and 290 lb.-ft of torque. The engine will fit in any Jeep vehicle previously equipped with the 4.0-liter I-6 engine.

Wait, what? So three years after Chrysler discontinued the 4.0L, and about a decade after junkyard scroungers figured out how to easily stroke the Jeep inline-six, Ma Mopar releases a crate version of it?

No less, thanks to some digging by the Jeep community, we know that the stroker crate engine (part no. P5155210) will carry a list price of $4,690, and for that price, all you’re getting is an ATK remanufactured long block, which ATK sells for $2,794.

Project HMX stroker 4.6

And, of course, if you’ve been following along on Project HMX, you’ll know that you can put together a stroker yourself (4.0L block + 258 crank and rods = 4.6L stroker) for much much less than either of the two above prices: Both 258s and 4.0Ls are plentiful in local classifieds across the country. Or, at least, they were before cash for clunkers.
