Checker Day, you say? Never heard of it. That’s because I just proclaimed it right here and right now. After all, July 12, 1922, is the day given as the start of Checker automobile production, and July 12, 1982, is the day given as the absolute end of Checker automobile production. Nifty how that worked out, innit?
And as if that weren’t reason enough to celebrate the cabs from Kalamazoo, we recently received an email from Joe Fay, a director of the Checker Car Club of America , with pictures of the 1949 Checker that he discovered in Oklahoma City. Why such a rare find? Well, Checkers didn’t exactly live lives of luxury - they were abused and used up real quick. As a consequence, very few pre-1960 Checkers have survived. In fact, only about 20 were thought to have survived until three years ago, when six more early Checkers were found in Finland.
Joe said he believes this car to be an A3 of some sort.
Looks pretty solid, appears to be a well weathered midwest barn find.
It’s now in dry storage. Very solid, cleaned out 40 years of rat condos yesterday.
Now will be looking into rust stripping services.
We’ll try to get Joe to provide updates as he researches and restores his latest find.
