HMX - bolts and nuts and blood and guts

The part of the front suspension rebuild I’ve not been looking forward to consisted of cleaning the rust and crud off all the nuts and bolts and figuring out some method of keeping the rust from returning. While a tumbler would’ve been nice for such a job, I don’t have one. And while we have a Fastenal store here in town, too many of the nuts and bolts are specific to this job and, if Fastenal even carried something similar, would’ve required a custom order. Besides, I already had all the stock nuts and bolts and I just set up my wire wheel, so I ran them all through the wheel over the weekend.

While I would’ve loved to keep the nuts and bolts in their shiny, fresh-from-cleaning state, as shown in the first photo, I knew the rust would return quickly, so I found a “zinc-rich cold galvanizing” spray paint at the local Tractor Supply. The can claims it excels at corrosion protection, so I crossed my fingers and laid down several coats as a primer. We’ll see how well it works.

Followed that up with some random silver spray paint I had on the shelf. With all the suspension parts and subframe painted black, I wanted a decent contrasting color for the fasteners.

And as anybody who’s ever tried wire wheeling nuts and bolts can attest, it ain’t easy, what with the wheel chucking small parts across the garage and a 3,500 rpm finger-licking machine capable of grinding away flesh. The squeamish should look away right about now.

No biggie; it’ll grow back.
