Hershey, home of the rare and the offbeat

Ah, Hershey. The gift that keeps on giving. When the thermometer is on the wrong side of 20 degrees, and the streets are filling up with what the Weather Channel likes to call “wintry mix,” it’s a good time to revisit Hershey’s fields. Here’s a memory that’s had me kicking myself - a collection of Citroën parts, each and every one priced at a dollar. I wish I’d brought something home with me, even though I don’t (yet) own a Citroën. You can make out the steering column, complete with single-spoke wheel, as well as the seat frame, the headlamps, the radio speaker and a bunch of other useable parts in the pile. Those doors look pretty useable, as do the windshield and back window, complete with defroster grid. Wish I’d found some room in the back of the Hemmings van for some of that stuff. One of those little tripod jacks would have been cool.

Not from the dollar bin, but a rare thing of beauty: a hood for a 1934 or 1935 La Salle. The price: $550 for the pair. My first thought with something like this is always, “wow, that would look great all by itself, as a decoration.” Followed by my second thought: “I really should leave that for someone who has a La Salle and needs it.” And my third: “Who am I kidding? I don’t have the $550, anyway.”

Another couple of parts for some all-American orphans: a rear axle for a 1915 Franklin, with an asking price of $195, and a radiator for a Packard truck, priced at $495. The seller was offering some neat candidates for restoration, too, like a running 1930 Hupmobile Century Six for $3,700. Cool stuff.
