Hemmings Find of the Day: 1970 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, Paris-Dakar edition

One of these has been haunting Pebble Beach for a few years, complete with a pair of externally mounted spares sunk into the trunklid. Doesn’t seem this particular Silver Shadow has that external-spare option, but it does come with racing history, having been entered in the 1981 Paris-Dakar rally. And it’s now for sale on Hemmings.com for $230,000. From the seller’s description:

Unique 1970 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, 1981 Paris-Dakar Rally entered 2 doors Coupe Toyota BJ/FJ 45 LWB chassis V8 Chevy 350 CI engine .4 speeds. 4X4. Monocoque fiberglass body. Doors hood trunk in aluminium . Roll cage. Racing seats. Fuel tank 400 liters. Power steering. Restored and ready to vintage race! Car visible in Paris France

From a bit of googling, we found out that the car is a result of a dinner bet made by Thierry de Montcorgé, who went on to get Christian Dior to sponsor the car (thus the Jules branding). It only raced once, broke about halfway through and was disqualified, but still somehow finished the race. Only 40 of the 170 vehicles entered in the race finished that year.
