Groomed and educated to eventually assume the reins of his father’s company, Alfredo “Dino” Ferrari was an early proponent of small displacement six-cylinder technology. After earning his engineering degree, Dino began the development of a new V-6 racing engine before his tragic death at the age of 24. To honor his son’s memory, Enzo directed the legendary engineer Vittorio Jano to finish Dino’s work, creating a series of very successful engines that ultimately powered various Ferrari F1, F2, and sports-racing cars. In fact, the driving force behind the development of the Dino road car was the then-current F2 regulations, which required production based engines.

Ferrari subsequently built a prototype for a six-cylinder production model, the Dino 206S, which was unveiled at the Paris Salon in 1965 and was succeeded by the Dino Berlinetta GT at the Turin Show the following year. The first production Dino, the 206 GT, appeared in 1967 at Turin. Powered by the 180 brake horsepower, 1,986cc V-6, it was not only Ferrari’s first mid-engine production car but also represented the debut of a new Ferrari Dino brand that, in keeping with Enzo’s intention to honor Dino Ferrari, was entirely devoid of Ferrari badging. Fiat manufactured the engine, foreshadowing the growing influence of the relationship between Ferrari and the Italian auto giant. This engine was also used in the front-engined Fiat Dino and later in the Lancia Stratos.

Despite its unique badges and Fiat-built engine, the 206 GT is unmistakably a Ferrari, and Piero Ferrari reportedly called it most beautiful Ferrari of all. Thanks to their balance and excellent power-to-weight ratio, these beautifully designed and tremendously enjoyable sports cars can run with any V-12 GT all day long.
