Classic Movies and Classic Cars

 joclair, 26.09.2007 in Partner- und Mitglieder-Blogs, blog.hemmings.com

I was watching the Hitchcock classic “Vertigo” this week on cable. It’s funny how you look at things differently when you work for a company that publishes car magazines. I have always enjoyed this movie but lately I have been paying a lot more attention to the cars featured in it. Classic movies are a great way to research classic cars of the past too.

One screen shot from Vertigo featuring a mid-fifties Rolls Royce Silver Cloud. The car was featured prominently in several scenes.

When Vertigo was filmed in San Francisco in the late fifties, all sorts of American independent manufacturers were still in business and you can see quick glimpses of them in several scenes. Tri-five Chevys and Ford Customlines were also commonplace during these years and can be seen throughout the film.

Jimmy Stewart tailing Kim Novak around the hilly streets of San Francisco in a mid-fifties De Soto. Classy car for the well-dressed business-type guy he portrayed.

Little did these fifties new car owners realize their daily drivers would appreciate so much in value in 40 years time. There aren’t too many commuter cars on today’s roads that will be able to appreciate five- or 10-fold in value by 2040.
