An Historical Gift

 Mark J. McCourt, 05.11.2009 in Partner- und Mitglieder-Blogs, blog.hemmings.com

I have a very thoughtful friend who keeps an eye out for interesting automotive books on my behalf. Among the gems she gave me for my most recent birthday was this very original publication, “Printed March 1st, 1923″: Repair Manual for Star Motor Cars, issued by STAR MOTORS, Inc., New York, N.Y.

This 147 page softcover is in remarkable condition for its age and intended purpose, and it’s filled with wonderful illustrations and diagrams.

The Star Motors company was operational between 1922 and 1928, and their first and best year of sales was 1923, when 75,185 cars were built. Hemmings’ own Special Interest Autos magazine published a short driveReport on a 1923 Star Touring car way back in issue #4, March-April 1971. Click on the following images to see the pages in larger form.

Interestingly, Star was an offshoot of GM founder William C. Durant’s Durant Motors, Inc., which was operational between 1921 and 1932.  By surprising coincidence, I have an original Durant data plate that, many years ago, I pulled off the remains of a rusted-out cowl that I found in the wooded swamp behind a neighbor’s house, and which has been decorating my bookshelf here at Hemmings!

It seems that the M4 that my data plate came off of was built in 1928, and was more commonly known as the six-cylinder, 40hp Model 55, available in Coupe, two-door Sedan and Town Sedan forms. It would be curious to know if any of the cars built around this one are still in existence!
