One Lap of America is a hardcore eight-day endurance race that alternates brutally competitive time-trial events with long hauls between tracks all over the coutry—and this year, I'm going to be tagging along with Steven Rankins' Subaru team to bring you all the action first hand, right here on the CarDomain blog! You might remember Steven's STi from last year's GRM Ultimate Track Car Challenge: it's set up for the track and running a heap of mods, including a Deadbolt turbo. Starting on May 2, our team of three will be on the road for over a week straight with nothing but a spare tire and a few extra parts, and while Steven will be doing the competition driving, each of us will be responsible for both wrenching and transport driving. There'll be streaming video on Steven's One Lap page and lots of great photos and stories here on CarDomain. Stay tuned, and check out the full press release after the jump!

The Boxer4Racing/Continental Tire team has once again commenced preparations for the Cannonball One Lap of America, which will take place from May 3rd-11th. One Lap is a grueling 4,000 mile, eight-day endurance event showcasing the capabilities and endurance of both cars and competitors in a cross-section of US motorsports events. This year, road-course events again make up the bulk of the competition, with autocross and drag racing events added to test the teams.

The 2008 One Lap will start and end in South Bend, Indiana, covering over 4000 miles of street driving through 18 states with stops at 10 sites for a total of 20 competitive events. Each team consists of at least two people so that the over-the-road portions can be completed safely. Scoring is calculated on a points scale for each competition, with highest-scoring teams awarded with class and overall finishing awards at the competition’s end.

The Boxer4Racing/Continental Tire team brings a unique combination of tuning, equipment and driving skill to the challenges ahead. Dale Teague of Boxer4Racing has improved on the showroom-floor STi model by adding a larger turbocharger from Deadbolt Enterprises, forcing enough air into the engine to gain 150 horsepower over stock output. Ohlins racing suspension keeps the vehicle sure-footed and stable during competition, where the car will reach speeds in excess of 160mph. Spare parts from Folger Subaru & SubaruPartsPro.com will keep the team in the competition in case of needed repairs. Last year, the Boxer4Racing STI finished 10th overall in the One Lap competition, and dominated in various National Auto Sport Association and Sports Car Club of America events, setting class track records across the Southeast in the process.

In light of last year’s exceptional tire performance, the team has once again chosen to compete on Continental Tire’s ContiSportContact3, a tire designed to meet the demands of powerful performance vehicles with shorter braking distances, increased driving dynamics, and greater driving stability. Last year on the ContiSportContact3 tires, the team managed a class win on the dry skidpad, pulling over 1.0g of cornering. Since One Lap teams are allowed the use of just six tires for the entire event, this tire’s performance in all areas, including handling, mileage, rolling resistance and braking, will play a critical role during this grueling event.

Steven Rankins of Charlotte, NC will take the helm during competition. Rankins has competed in a variety of motorsports events since 1999, including Hill Climbs, Time Trials, Time Attack and National level autocross events. He holds several class track records across the Southeast and has dominated a number of events driving the STi.

Steven Kornhaus from Knoxville, TN has joined the team as a transit driver and support engineer. Steven competes in SCCA autocross events, and is gaining a start in track racing events. Steven has proven himself in his 2006 Subaru STi by claiming multiple National SCCA autocross wins, including the Southeast Divisional Championship. Steven will help with vehicle prep, highway driving, and photography.

Jen Dunaway of Seattle, WA completes the team. An editor at the car enthusiasts’ website CarDomain.com, she contributes daily to the site’s popular news blog. She worked as a part-time mechanic throughout college and graduate school, and today she drives and works on her vintage AMC and two Fords. Jen will be documenting the team’s progress online in addition to sharing transport driving and vehicle prep duties.

The team’s progress during the event can be followed at the CarDomain Blog, and at the team's profile page on OneLapper.com, where the team will upload pictures, manage a daily blog, and thanks to www.o2securewireless.net and www.ustream.tv, host a live video stream of their competition in the event.
