Under the shadows of the Rose Bowl, the 3rd Annual Los Angeles Concours d'Elegance took place this past Sunday. With an eclectic collection spanning all automotive eras, attendees were treated to prewar classics, woodies and station wagons from the forties and fifties, exotics from a variety of European marques, cars from the fifties and sixties, race cars, hot rods, and a sprinkling of muscle cars. The 350 cars cut an impressive pose on the manicured lawns of the Brookside Golf Course adjacent to the Pasadena landmark. Continue reading...
The event, which benefits the Assistance League of Southern California who provides help to needy schoolchildren and families in the greater Los Angeles area, has in three short years become a “must attend” event on the West Coast concours schedule. It has become such a strong program that not only has it attracted a stellar field from private collectors, but has gained the support of top-tier collections such as the Nethercut and the Petersen museums, who brought multiple classics to display. And if your tastes run to the unusual and rare, you would have been treated to a stunning 1956 Pegaso Z 102, looking like a cross between a fifties Ferrari and Aston Martin.
More than 350 cars were on display, covering every automotive genre. And while there were many truly stunning cars on display, especially from the prewar era, one car really caught my attention, a pretty 1959 Triumph Italia 2000 owned by Lisa Milne of nearby Sierra Madre, making its competition debut after the completion of an extensive restoration. Based on the Triumph TR3, the limited production Italia was an attempt to combine the reliability and robustness of a Triumph roadster with the beauty of an Italian coupe and it was the winner in the vintage Triumph class. After her award was announced I spoke at length with Lisa who told me the car had been in her family since 1991 and at one time, it was her mother’s daily driver. While there were cars on display with more noteworthy pedigrees, Lisa silver coupe was my choice as best of show. Look for a longer feature on this car soon at CarDomain.
Over at Automotive Traveler we’ve just posted our newest image gallery showcasing dozens of the cars of the 2008 Los Angeles Concours d’Elegance. It’s a good reminder to mark your calendar for next June by keeping your eye on the Assistance League of Southern California’s web site for the announcements for the date for next year’s event.
