With their versatility, station wagons have served in a variety of roles – family commuter, grocery getter, vacation steed, suburban fixture – but one role they haven’t yet filled is that of documentary subject. Thanks to two film students, that’s no longer the case, and station wagon enthusiasts will soon get a change to see a preview of their work.

Sam Smartt and Chris Zaluski, both Master of Fine Arts students in the Documentary Film Program at Wake Forest University, will screen their upcoming documentary “Wagonmasters” at next month’s Concours d’Elegance of America. Not coincidentally, this year’s Concours d’Elegance of America will include Jet-Age Station Wagons among its featured classes.

As Smartt and Zaluski explain on the website for the documentary, station wagons were a quintessential part of the American dream and its evolution over the last century.

Station wagons were America’s “workhorses on wheels.” Today, they conjure images of outdated family photos, over-sized hairdos and unfashionable wooden siding.

There are some, however, who still cling to these vehicles and what they stand for in American culture. “Wagonmasters,” a full-length documentary film, offers glimpses into the lives of such wagon enthusiasts, and tells the story of the station wagon as it represents a changing America over the last one hundred years.

At its heart, Wagonmasters is a film about reconnecting with America’s past as one of its most memorable chapters comes to a close.

The 40-minute documentary (which includes interviews with a certain Brooklynite we’re all familiar with) will air every hour throughout the day on Saturday, July 28, with a question-and-answer session with the filmmakers after every screening.

The Concours d’Elegance of America will take place Sunday, July 29, at the Inn at St. John’s in Plymouth, Michigan. For more information, visit ConcoursUSA.org.
