What can I say? I think I love this Monaco fire chief car (listed as a Coronet) more than life itself. But I've decided I "really shouldn't" buy any more cars until I'm done paying off my student loans. So instead, I'm tying to convince John to get it. It's totally him, right? Come on, man, bid!

With over 20,000 smart cars delivered in 2008, it's not surprising that more of them are starting to be involved in wrecks. Well, I'm sure I'm gonna disappoint some of you guys when I say that I feel pretty damn safe in my smart. What do you think?

With all the hype about gas mileage and tire inflation, everyone's familiar with the kind of tire wear caused by overinflated and underinflated tires. But do you remember what your rollomundos can tell you about some of the less obvious suspension and alignment issues? Read on for a quick refresher.
Shoulder wear (outer edge more worn down than inner). Usually due to excessive positive camber—the wheel is angled inward from top to bottom. Check the alignment, but...

Originally I was thinking of putting the V6 Eclipse against the V6 Mustang, but the V6 Eclipse is priced about the same as the Mustang GT. So even with a picture of a pink Mustang and the sportier Eclipse, the V6 Mustang still dominated this week's showroom showdown by a 2 to 1 margin (and for those of you who think you can stuff the ballot, we can see when someone votes more than once). I thought that "John" summed this one up nicely:
I am definitely an...

The Vise-Grips plant in DeWitt, Nebraska, which has assembled the locking pliers for the last 80 years, will be moving its operations to China. It strikes kind of a note with me because only yesterday I was discussing some ways to free up a frozen and rounded-off brake-line fitting with some people at the parts counter, and a local mechanic recommended the method of lest resort: get some Vise-Grips on the fitting, "nuke 'em" real tight, and just go for it. "Only...

It's been one crazy summer for the guys at DUB. As you can imagine, there are a lot of moving parts to tend to on a traveling car show, and everybody there has been working around the clock to make sure all the stops go off without a hitch. So I guess I can forgive them for being a little tardy in selecting our DUB finalists, right? But enough ball busting. Our latest DUB finalist is Don, who has built one hell of an Expedition. I mean, just look at this thing! How much...

Every year I go to various car shows and cruise-ins, but there's only one I really wait for. Unfortunately it's a long wait, since it doesn't happen until the end of the summer on the weekend after Labor Day: I'm talking about the Adirondack Nationals. It's scheduled as an all-weekend show, but cars start trickling into Lake George, NY as early as the Monday before.
The main show itself is held at the Fort William Henry Resort, and houses several hundred...

It's not like this is the only Gallardo in the world outfitted with twin-turbos, but the system that Underground Racing built is so sexy that it almost seems a shame to cover it up. And seriously, all aesthetics aside, that gleaming gear practically doubles the Gallardo's horsepower, so hitting the gas is probably equal parts terror and awe. Thanks to the guys at Speedhunters for digging up this awesome glamor shot!

What a weekend! With over 300 km of competitve stages, the New Zealand rally offered enough gravel to pick out of your teeth for days to come. The weather held off and the light gravel stages made for some pretty impressive driving and some very interesting tactics. On the first day, Jarri-Matti Latvala slowed before the last stage of the day to force two cars ahead of him to clear a lot of the loose gravel. And again, on the second day, rally leader Sebastien Loeb...

This is a car that I have been waiting for as French motors with revvy engines are 'my thing' (check out my ride page!). It's the Renaultsport Twingo which has been given boost in power. Ok, so it's only 131 bhp, but remember this is a little car!
The car I drove in Portugal had the 'Cup' chassis. The car has been lowered by 14mm over the standard Twingo and also has stiffer springs, dampers and a widened track. This basically means you don't have to slow down for...

As hybrids go, I always liked the original Honda Insight a lot better than Toyota's Prius. It's way less awkward-looking, its little truncated rear references the CRX, and its fender-skirted roundiness almost makes it look like it should have its own mouse pad. Plus, after the Insight was killed off a couple of years ago, owning one took on a kind of renegade flavor—something about it says true geek car, whereas the Prius just aims to placate sanctimonious suburban...

Admit it--you never thought Hudson Hornets were performance vehicles until you saw the character Doc Hudson in the animated film "Cars." Although feared on American streets and tracks back in the day, the Hudson Hornet has remained almost anonymous to multiple generations of enthusiasts.
In the years following WWII, cars were largely pre-war designs tweaked for luxury, utility or performance. American manufacturer Hudson rocked the world in 1948 with the...

"Do not paint or modify the vehicle," the letter from Ford admonished. Pity, because if I was keeping this Flex, I'd be going to town on it. Ford lent me the Flex for a week so I could get a solid feel for the car that I think is going to be the next big thing in the modification scene. It got a ton of attention on the road everywhere I took it, and quite a few people wanted to see the inside. My verdict: I love it! My Flex had the cool parts of a big...

If there's one thing that's lacking in conventional RC cars, it's their inability to defy gravity. Why shouldn't your cars be able to run up walls and across ceilings? Air Hogs must've been thinking the same thing, because they've developed an RC that uses a tiny fan to generate sufficient vacuum to let the light-bodied vehicle stick to unlikely surfaces. They're available on Amazon for 40-bucks-and-change, though anyone who'd plunk down this kind of coin for...

While I was in Detroit for the American Le Mans Series race last weekend, I was a little freaked out by how incredibly tight and technical the Belle Isle course was. Seriously, it looked like one little screw up would send you sliding into the concrete barriers, and I was curious to see what an entire lap looked like from a driver's perspective. So imagine how stoked I was when I saw that someone had posted a clip of lead Corvette engineer Tom Wallace navigating the...

Over a year ago, in the inexorable ramp-up to the introduction of the Nissan GT-R super car, the NISMO 350Z was introduced at the 2007 New York International Automobile Show. In a way, it's almost as if it got lost in the shuffle, and with an as-delivered price of $39,615, it flew under most enthusiasts' radar. So what's it like?
Well, after eight days, two intense road trips to the California Desert, and almost 2,000 miles, I have a very clear idea....

Corsa Motorsports is teaming up with hybrid powerplant builder Zytec Group to run a gas-electric LMP1 prototype car in the American Le Mans Series. The hybrid features an E10 ethanol-fueled 4.5L V8 as well as a Li-ion powered 35kW electric motor, and will debut next month in the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta—which CarDomain will be covering live! If all goes well, Corsa hopes to field a two-car team during the 2009 season. An attempt has been made once before to run...

This week's Showroom Showdown is the battle of the base models. The base Mustang is RWD, has a 210 hp V6 and weighs 3,300 pounds. The Eclipse GS is FWD, has a 168 hp four banger and weighs 3,263 pounds. Both are available with manual trannies, have useless back seats and come in right around $20k. Which would you choose?

Despite recent anecdotal evidence to the contrary, traffic deaths are actually going down. So far down, in fact, that they're on track to hit their lowest levels since 1961. It's probably the one silver lining associated with sky-high gas prices—as drivers slow down, clock fewer miles, and cut unnecessary trips, the number of deaths declines sharply. The insurance companies have been quietly enjoying the decline in claims resulting from the 12 billion fewer miles...
