By Sam Barer Sound Classics To any student of the world’s best GT cars, the Studebaker Avanti is a coveted classic. Studebaker was an early producer of automobiles, making the jump from creating horse-drawn carriages. It developed a reputation for being well-built, yet slightly stodgy cars. Seeking to find a niche after World War II, the company danced between conservative sedans and quirky coupes. In 1954, just as the company fell out of the top ten auto producers, they purchased Packard....

By Jen Dunnaway Editor I'm not so sure that the custom treatment on this '87 Corvette is the best possible thing for the car's appearance, but the mods clearly do wonders for leg-room. Actually, with the extra accessibility made possible by the doors, this quite possibly the world's best 'Vette for old people. They'd probably want to retire someplace sunny, though, because the car doesn't have a top or windows. But the seller seems to think it's worth something—he claims it won first place...

By John Coyle Editor There's a lot going on with James' Toyota Matrix, but I'm having a hard time getting past that awesome paint job. And I dig how with all the doors open, it looks like the car is exploding! Right now, he's debating what to do for his winter project, and he's narrowed it down to taking the roof off or removing the back seats and adding a full fiberglass interior. I voted for the interior, because I like my vehicles to have roofs, but that's just my opinion. Head over to...

By Jen Dunnaway Editor I love stock-looking restos that are hiding some serious performance, like this '61 Ford Starliner, packing a 427 SOHC "Cammer" engine that'll make 622 hp and 533 lb ft of torque. Such a refined-looking ride: I loved the open hardtop body style, the huge expanse of rear glass, and the fully-intact factory chrome trim. But the stock body conceals a fully fabbed Art Morrison chassis with adjustable coil-overs front and rear. The interior, including the thin-shell bucket...

By John Coyle Editor Given that most cars which transport children wind up smelling like a combination of toddler vomit, sour milk and mashed crayons, I wouldn't take any kid in a Spyker until they were well into their teens. But I guess the rich are different. These cars are known for their uber-plush interiors, and obviously, anyone who appreciates the handiwork enough to actually buy one isn't going to want to compromise if they have to tote their tot—hence the custom booster seat....

By John Coyle Editor When we were writing up last year's Best of SEMA coverage, I mistakenly identified a 300C as a Bentley. It was an unbelievably stupid move, and for the next three months or so, whenever we saw a 300C, Rob or Jen would be all, "hey, sweet Bentley." And while that whole painful incident is behind me now, I couldn't help but think about it when I saw this almost Bentley-grade Mopar at SEMA. While I can't say I'm all about the targa top, I think the long wheelbase,...

By Jen Dunnaway Editor There'll always be vehicles at SEMA that just kind of blow your mind, and for me, this spinning Chevy pickup was one of them. The guys at Z. Galena were nice enough to demo the tall truck's capabilities, even though they'd apparently already caught some flack for doing just that. Clearly it's not the most functional vehicle on the show floor, but hell, I figure anything capable of generating this much childish joy without even firing up is well worth the booth space....

By Rob Einaudi Editor-in-Chief Even with all the wild and modified rides at SEMA, this clean '63 Polara wagon still turned a lot of heads. One more pic after the jump.

By Rob Einaudi Editor-in-Chief I couldn't find any info on this cool little truck, but after passing it about twenty times on the way to and from the media center, I finally decided to stop and snap some pics. More after the jump.

By Rob Einaudi Editor-in-Chief We followed the Vivid Racing EVO X build pretty closely leading up to SEMA, so I thought you might like to see how it looked at SEMA. Pretty damn hot! More pics after the jump. And for full specs, check out Dan's ride page.

By Rob Einaudi Editor-in-Chief I really loved this Duramax-powered 1970 C/10 built by Chris Calkins. It was the DHRA Pro Street Champion last year, and consistently runs mid-10s. There's a full writeup on this awesome truck at Diesel Power Magazine, and I have a bunch more pics after the jump. Too bad the hood was down!

By Jen Dunnaway Editor Sure, vehicles built for audio competition don't always have to look like something you could actually drive. But seriously, this fugly sound stage BMW doesn't even have a steering wheel. Of course we've had the Alpine "Sinister Six" in the blog before—it's been around for a few years, and how it's managed to evade the crusher all this time is a mystery. The car's days may be numbered, though—it seemed neglected, and was covered in dust. More...

By Jen Dunnaway Editor Like last year, Ford's booth was a corridor that took up an entire wall of one convention hall, and it had a swanky showroom feel to it. They were huge on the Flex, which took up quite a bit of real estate, many of them slick custom editions like the searing orange-fade Galpin Auto Sports Flex. At the far end were a number of burly trucks, including the Raptor, a 2010 F-150 with an SVT suspension and optional 6.2L V8. There were some nice old-school touches as well,...

By John Coyle Editor Obviously, I've seen pics of Lambo's uber-rare, million dollar supercar before, but I was still excited to see one in person. The only thing that sucked? The Pirelli folks had it surrounded by obnoxious, picture-ruining barriers. And while I understand that this is a pricey car and everything, SEMA is hardly a K-Mart parking lot. All the folks on the floor are respectful, and know better than to rub their grubby mitts all over the show cars. But that said, I...

By Rob Einaudi Editor-in-Chief Subaru is definitely serious about their racing and performance image. Not a whole lot of bling here. I loved this Crawford Performance time attack car. And of course they had one of their official Subaru Rally Team USA cars. A ton more pics after the jump.

By Rob Einaudi Editor-in-Chief Here's the Goodguys giveaway car for a 2009, a tough 615 hp 1970 Nova built by Precision Coachworks. Designed in conjunction with Air Ride Technologies, this is a serious g-machine, and you can even take a ride in it on the autocross before the lucky winner gets the car next year. See more specs and pics here, plus I have some more shots after the jump. And sorry about the dude with the blue backpack—I didn't see him til I uploaded the pics.

By Jen Dunnaway Editor After watching Corsa Motorsports' cars run in the Petit Le Mans last month, I was stoked to run across one of them in the Dunlop booth. It's a Zytek LMP1, running in the top class of the series against serious contenders like the TDI Audi R10s. Corsa's cars were supposed to have been ethanol/electric hybrids, running both a 4.5L 90-degree V8 and a 35 kW direct-drive electric motor—but since the electric technology wasn't ready in time for this season's races, they're...

By John Coyle Editor Last night, the editorial staff all went out to the Scion party at Prive. There was a gigantic line to get in,  the music was loud enough to make our fillings rattle, and most importantly, there was free booze! Obviously we had a blast, but this morning, I personally felt like I'd just fallen out of a garbage truck. But after I dragged my sorry ass into SEMA, I got a big burst of energy. With all the awesome stuff to look at, how could I not? Head over to the events...

By Katherine Helmetag AKA atomicalex Let's face it: SEMA is all about swag. So far, the swag competition has a clear winner: Sears Craftsman. We got these cool tool bags full of Craftsman stuff—tshirt, work gloves, sticker, cards, and best of all, a cap wrench. Yes, you know what that is for. Jen and I agree—the toolbags are going to be perfect for our junkyard forays. Thank you, Mr. Craftsman!

By Rob Einaudi Editor-in-Chief Front and center in the Mothers booth is their 2007 Shine Award winner, a 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air bubble top built by Dennis McClendon, Rich Thayer, Bryan Butler and Denny John. With over 100 body modifications, this chopped, stretched, cut and wedged Chevy features a 409 bored & stroked to 484 CI with a one-off vintage Algon fuel injection mated to a Richmond 6-speed and a Currie rear with 4.10:1 gears. The low-slung tube chassis has Air Ride suspension,...

By Rob Einaudi Editor-in-Chief I just talked to Larry our photographer and I think we can officially say that there are no hi-risers at SEMA this year. What gives? Is it over for hi-risers? This Riviera was a pretty big hit last year. Update: ok, looks like there are at least two hi-risers here. I saw the big limo that was here last year parked across the street. And Mike said he saw another one in the DUB area. Pics of the limo after the jump.
