It’s been a long time coming, but the Rover finally has its powertrain back. Once the new rear main seal was installed, it was a simple matter to bolt up the pressure plate and slide the gearbox back into position. The splines on my Volvo clutch alignment tool fit the Rover’s clutch disc perfectly.

 It’s been a while - okay, a really long time - since I last posted something about the Rover. But I have been making some progress in the meantime.
While I had the engine out, I decided to spruce it up a bit, and to do a little preventive maintenance. The cast-iron block of the Rover four has steel side covers, and if I was ever going to pull them off to see what kind of shape they were in, now was the time.

When writing the post a couple weeks back about pink muscle cars, I had forgotten another pink AMX I spotted a few years back, at the same AMO show at which I photographed the Jeepster Commando SC-1. Here’s one that Scroggins and Taylor could have used. When Paul Bellefeuille spotted Sunday’s SIA Flashback on Cars That Run on Rails, he immediately thought of this 1950 Dodge Coronet that he spotted in the Hemmings classifieds. According to the description in the ad, not only is it a seven-passenger limousine, but it was specially built for executive transportation on the Boston and Maine railroad, which likely explains the extremely narrow track.

Nicely restored 1916 International Autowagon. The original run-flat tires were still in good shape too.

After reading our post on the Boonie Bug a couple weeks ago, Greg Allen must’ve also wondered exactly which vehicle in Total Recall was the Boonie Bug.  Went to the show in Rhinebeck on Father’s Day and there was quite a mixed bag of antiques displayed. Although the show was for just about everything except cars, I found a few scattered throughout the grounds.

Hemmings Muscle Machines subscribers will shortly get in the mail their May 2008 issue with a nice wide-angle studio shot of Ralph Barbagallo ’s A12 Road Runner. It’s a great image shot by a great photographer, Dino Petrocelli in his Latham, New York, studio. Chopper guys might recognize Dino’s name; his work has appeared on countless chopper magazine covers and he’s probably photographed the Orange County Choppers guys more than most photographers have. He’s only recently started to shoot cars in his studio, which as you can see above, was really built for bikes. He makes it work, though.

I had a chance to view the shoot of Ralph’s A12, and though I’ve shot in a studio before, it’s always a treat to get to see another photographer at work and to pick up tips here and there. It’s also interesting to note the differences between studio photography, where you control pretty much every aspect of the shoot, from lighting to backgrounds, and the semi-guerrilla on-location photography that we typically do at Hemmings, where in comparison we control very little of the location. Each has its advantages; each has its disadvantages.
Unfortunately, Ralphie didn’t do a burnout in the studio, despite Dino claiming that he takes bike burnout shoots in the studio all the time.
