I've been keeping my head up for weeks here in the D, but even I'll admit: it's getting ugly. The amount of hate being directed at the USOEMs is pretty amazing, considering the love that's been shown to the financial sector. Local news station WWJ's Automotive Insight editor John McElroy took to the airwaves yesterday and begged listeners not to panic in light of the resistance in Congress. From my seat on the inside, I can see how close things are to...

Here in the wooly Northeast, even in the summertime, it’s not often one spies a dune buggy, far from its ancestral home of sun, sand and surf. But the last couple years, I’ve spotted this blue buggy with all the right touches here and there, and it makes me feel funny inside, like there’s something missing from my life—like a topless, doorless fiberglass bucket wrapped around my hide with just a single-hoop rollbar over my head would fill that hole.
Most...

Given the huge amount of instantaneously-available torque that the performance electric cars generate, the results of these 800-ft. runs aren't all that surprising. Still, it's interesting to see Dodge's new EV take on some of the more respected members of the company's own product line, even if neither of the cars is being particularly flogged on during the two exhibition runs. I wonder how the EV would do against an SRT-10 Viper. More at the LA Times blog.

Dymag isn't going to be offering the 100% carbon fiber wheels that Rob blogged recently. But at the SEMA show, the company apparently struck a deal with manufacturer HRE to produce these hybrid wheels, with carbon hoops, aluminum centers, and titanium hardware. The rims will likely retail for between $2500 and $4000 each, meaning that a full set of them will cost between ten and sixteen times more than what I'd generally pay for an entire running car. More at...

I have the original June 1980 issue in a box in my basement, but Car and Driver just made their famous pot smoking and driving road test available in their archives. It's still just as funny as I remember. Don't try this at home!

While I was covering the American Le Mans Series this year, I got a chance to check out a lot of the SCCA World Challenge cars. One make that was totally absent? Lamborghini. For reasons unknown, Ferruccio Lamborghini didn't want to race his creations, so until very recently—with the announcement of the Super Trofeo Series—there had never been any factory recognition to competition Lamborghinis. But that doesn't mean privateers haven't taken Raging Bulls onto the...

After a burly week in Sin City covering SEMA, I have to say it's nice to be home in cold, rainy Seattle. The other thing that's nice? Getting back to CarDomain HQ and seeing what y'all have been up to! And there couldn't have been a better video to welcome me home. Brad put together a great little clip about his Impulse, and it genuinely warmed my heart. I loved the music, because it made me think of Christine—"how'd you hurt your back Arine?—but that doesn't mean I...

So there I was, minding my own business and checking out the pretty colored wheels at the Giovanna booth, when a forklift comes out of nowhere and starts knocking down the barriers. Instead of filming the aftermath like a good blogger, I jumped in front of the barriers and the offending forklift to save this pretty Lambo from certain destruction. What was I thinking?

There's definitely an extent to which "art" is in the eye of the beholder, but there's no question that what superstar drifter Vaughn Gittin Jr. does with tire tracks in this video is beyond cool. Even more awesome is the fact that he pulled this off in the streets in the heart of Los Angeles—even though they'd been closed, that had to take some serious skills. Watch below, and see more at Bosch Performance Art.

Brazil. One of my best friends lived there for a couple of years, and he's repeatedly said I'm totally crazy for not moving to San Paulo immediately. While bourbon is expensive, you can make good money teaching English, the people are wonderful, and the food is stellar. But he didn't tell me about the fact that there, my favorite word—aside from "inappropriate"—is benign enough that it can appear on the side of a building and not raise any ire. Since most Americans...

After we hold our Grassroots Motorsports $200x Challenges, the bitching starts. No way, no one is that talented, they cry. I present Exhibit A, the Petty-inspired Civic we showcased with a cover last year. So, these guys have been building cars for years and are pros, right? Well, not really. Team leader Mike White owns a framing shop in real life, and only really started playing with cars a few years ago. However, he realized that if he takes his time...

Dodge may have canceled their plans to build a Challenger convertible, but you can't stop the aftermarket. Coach Builders Ltd. will chop the top off the new Challenger for $16,000. The topless Mopar is reinforced via strut bars hidden inside the trunk, and includes an acrylic polyester cloth hydraulic top, matching fabric headliner and a heated glass rear window. The green SRT8 they are bringing to SEMA also sports a Vortech supercharger, a KW coil-over...

Icon: an image or representation. American sports car icon: a first generation Corvette, red with white coves, thank you very much!
55 years after the concept was first unveiled at Motorama in January, 1953, the Corvette is still America’s most beloved sports car. Through six generations, more than a million Corvettes have been delivered to lucky owners. While there have been faster, better handling cars, the first generation Corvette has retained a place in...

I kind of like the vintage-newsreel treatment on this video. It makes the '76 Caprice look a lot more old-school than it actually is.

Named after a sleepy town just 17 miles north of the Mexican border, where Carroll Shelby, Bill Neale, and crew would spend their downtime drinking, shooting guns, and blasting Shelby cars on the vast expanses of open highway, the Shelby Terlingua Mustang represents a slap in the face to what society expects a muscle car to be. So says Shelby President Amy Boylan, who spent some time with me yesterday talking about the history of this wonderful town and the...

We get a lot of boring press release spam, but this one from the Istituto Europeo di Design di Torino was pretty cool so I decided to go ahead and post it. The "Dream" exhibition, which opened last week in Turin, Italy, features a bunch of gorgeous cars designed in Turin from the 50s until today. Full press release and more great pics after the jump.

If you do, and you let the soapy water run into the storm drains, you might be killing fish in your local streams, lakes and ocean. This post on Autoblog describing a newly proposed driveway car washing ban in Clark County, Washington got me surfing around a bit. Here's a pretty intense study on the impact of driveway car washing on the Puget Sound. Our local King County, Washington site describes how to build a car wash kit for schools, clubs, churches and...

Hey, remember that awesome Charger pace car I told you about on my first day at Dover? Yep, some lucky bastard got to drive it home. The Charger ended up being the speedway's giveaway car during today's pre-race festivities, and Buck and Bass from Rowdy.com got to do the honors and hand over the keys. The six finalists who gathered at the start-finish line had been entered automatically in the drawing when they renewed their season passes. There were six keys in the...

Today in NASCAR's regional Camping World East Series, a bunch of stuff happened. Aric Almirola won the race his first time in as a substitute driver, and owner-driver Matt Kobyluck clinched the season championship, becoming the first Native American ever to do so in any NASCAR series. Congrats all around! Also, our beleaguered No. 15 team suffered an unfortunate wreck and finished last, and I believe the No. 26 car got tagged on both ends in an even more violent...

And do they match the nationality of your vehicle? For example, do you roll with Cooper tires on your Chevy, or Falkens on your Nissan? Obviously, a lot of OEM tires don't match the nationality of the car. For example, our Jag XF test car has Pirellis. And Ferrari uses Goodyears on many of their cars. I'm sure it might piss some old school muscle car guys off off, but this guy went with Yokohamas on his 'Cuda.

Looks like they're going to be running this tough hemi Charger at the front of the pack! But I wonder, how long before we see a new Challenger pace car in any of the major racing series? None of the Sprint Cup Dodge teams managed to make the Chase for the Cup this year, and with rumors swirling that Mopar may be questioning its commitment to racing (they've already pulled out of the Craftsman Truck Series), the pace car issue might be a touchy one for the...

Summer is over, and event season is coming to a close. But you wouldn't have known that if you were in San Jose last weekend—the DUB show was a hot as ever! My personal favorite rides were the XJ high-riser and the insane Lucky Charms donk, but there were plenty of awesome whips on the floor. Enjoy the pics!
